Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, yet it remains one of the most neglected areas of healthcare, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. Mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia affect millions of people globally, often leading to significant social and economic burdens (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). Despite the growing prevalence of mental health conditions, stigma, misinformation, and inadequate awareness persist, preventing individuals from seeking timely intervention (Brown & Williams, 2023).
Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, play an essential role in promoting mental health awareness, early detection, and patient support. Their responsibilities include educating patients and communities about mental health, advocating for better mental health policies, and providing psychosocial support to individuals with mental disorders (Taylor & Smith, 2024). However, many nurses lack sufficient training in mental health promotion, limiting their ability to effectively engage in awareness campaigns and patient education.
At Oyo State General Hospital, where nurses encounter patients with various mental health concerns, their role in promoting awareness remains largely unexplored. This study aims to examine how nurses contribute to mental health education, the challenges they face, and strategies for enhancing their role in mental health promotion.
Mental health issues are increasingly becoming a public health concern, yet many individuals fail to seek treatment due to stigma and lack of awareness. Research has shown that healthcare workers, including nurses, often lack adequate training and resources to effectively address mental health issues (Gonzalez et al., 2023). This gap in knowledge and awareness contributes to delayed diagnosis, poor treatment outcomes, and continued stigma surrounding mental illness (Johnson & Carter, 2024).
At Oyo State General Hospital, nurses interact with patients across different departments, providing an opportunity to integrate mental health awareness into general healthcare services. However, their current level of involvement in mental health education and awareness campaigns has not been systematically evaluated. This study seeks to assess the role of nurses in mental health promotion, the barriers they face, and ways to strengthen their contribution to mental health awareness.
This study focuses on nurses at Oyo State General Hospital involved in mental health awareness initiatives. It does not include other healthcare professionals or patients receiving psychiatric care. Limitations may include variations in individual experience and self-reported biases in assessing nurses' effectiveness in mental health education.
